Asomatos is a small village in the south of Crete close to Moni Preveli, on the Rethimnon - Armeni - Koxare - Moni Preveli road. From the village you have beautiful views of the sea and the Paximadia Islands.
The Gorge of Kourtaliotis is one of the most attractive around the area of Rethimno. It starts at the slopes of the mountains Kouroupa and Ksiros, a little after the village Koksare, it follows river Kourtaliotis and ends up at the beach of Limni Preveli. When the wind hauls one hears a sound similar to rattle and this is what the name of the gorge and the river means at local dialect. Along the gorge you will come across the traditional arched stone bridges and several small water falls while you will have to walk through the rivers water at some points or even climb at the rocks. Depending to your pace and your stops to admire the palm grooves or even take a swim at the little ponds created in-between the rocks of the bed of the river, it will take you something like four and a half hours to cross the gorge and find yourself from the village Asomatos to the beach.
